Here is a rough VFX test we did using video shot on location. Mainly trying out sky replacement (very rushed- not representative of the final renders), color schemes and shot choices.

Opening Animatic: We start out in the stars. A planet slowly comes into view. Five points of light, ships, are streaking upwards and away from the planets surface. These points fade, into fingers, rising over the planet which morphs into the curve of a pregnant belly. The fingers move up and over the top of the belly’s curve, coming to rest across the top.

Crewing Up - Art Department
I’m very happy to announce new additions to the crew:
April and Carl Martin have joined “The Ascendant” in the art department.
We couldn’t be more happy to have two highly skilled visual artists creating the props that will truly help flesh out the world of “The Ascendant”.
Here is the link to some of their work through their Shinka Studios outfit.

Here is the very first project I did at UT. It’s called “Mirages on the Sea of Time”, it was created for an “inner world” project. I chose to document the subject of “memory. The footage is taken from footage I shot during the summer of 2010 when I did sort of a long trip across the pacific to visit family. My 2010 short film.
Watch this short film “The Choctaw Funeral Cry” directed and written by Jonathan J. Johnson, co-writer of “The Descendants”.
A few more tests. The first showing the topographical readout on Captain Voight-Kampfs tablet. The second, a few variations of the cockpit readout after the crash. Alpha stage. Lots more work needed. Want to eventually animated every doodad in the interface.
Hologram/Tablet FX test.
AE and photoshop. Note on the clip with the background plate that i’ve tried to approximate a reflection… That’s going to be a nightmare with the real footage…
How To Place Tracking Markers →
This video is probably going to be a lifesaver in terms of the shoots on location where we need to track each shot to be able to place 2d/3d objects in the landscape.
